Things have been under construction lately. As you can see I've been busy planning for the autumn....
I've been thinking about how I want to show up with my writing and what kinds of writing I want to help grow. After doing some workshops in the spring, I have realized that I don't feel quite complete without an element of teaching and getting to be a part of others' learning. I love seeing other people write! But I've also learned that I need to balance teaching with time and space for my own writing practice. So, I have been looking for a way for my writing and my teaching to work together.
I used to work for a small science-education outreach organization, the Ohio Energy Project. It was a great job, especially because they were always looking for new ways to teach, new ways to get kids excited about science. It was my job to be creative. Whenever I said 'I have an idea' to my friend Mary, she'd grin and clap her hands. She'd say, 'I like it when you say that, because you get so excited about your ideas.' I still do. Mary, I have an idea.
My idea is to create writing circles, starting this autumn. A writing circle is a group of writers who come together each week to write, to support each other, and to grow. We listen with an ear for the writer's intention, working in good faith to help that intention come through in its true voice. It's not always easy figuring out just what it is we want to say, and having a community that works towards helping us shape and realise our stories can be invaluable.
